The TIE in Guadalajara: from your fingerprints to the card
Your TIE starts with a fingerprint visit, the toma de huellas, booked for the province of Guadalajara soon after you arrive; policia.es lists TIE issue at the Brigada on Avenida del Ejército 12. A second visit collects the card: the foreign resident’s identity card (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero), with your photo and your NIE.
The keystone: your visa or your resolution
The card proves a right you already have; it does not create it. That right comes from a visa issued by a Spanish consulate, or from a resolución, a written decision of the Oficina de Extranjería, the government office for permits.
If you came with a visa, book the fingerprints in your first days here. The deadline is short, and it counts from the day you enter Spain. If your authorisation was granted while you were already here, it counts from the day you are told of the decision.
Huellas TIE Guadalajara: the fingerprint appointment
Toma de huellas means “taking of fingerprints”. At this appointment the officer checks your papers, scans your fingerprints and records the details for your card. policia.es lists “expedición TIE”, the issue of the card, for Guadalajara’s Brigada Provincial de Extranjería y Fronteras, Avenida del Ejército 12.
Book the procedure for fingerprints and card issue on the official booking website, for the province of Guadalajara, and pay the tasa 790-012 before the day. Your confirmation shows the office and the hour.
Your folder for the fingerprints
- Form EX-17, complete and signed by you
- Passport with your visa inside, if you came with one, plus a copy
- The resolución granting your authorisation, when you have one
- A recent colour photo, passport size, with a white background
- Proof of the 790-012 payment, with the card box ticked
- A padrón certificate, if the office asks for proof of your address
- Your appointment confirmation
After the fingerprints
You leave with a resguardo, a receipt that shows your card is being made. Keep the resguardo safe, next to your passport. Once the card is made, you return to pick it up; the office tells you how, and in many provinces the collection has its own cita previa. Bring your passport and the resguardo, and check the name, the dates and the type of residence before you leave the desk.
When the card comes to its end date
Renewing is two things. First the residence itself is renewed, as a separate request. Then you give your fingerprints again for a new card, with the same NIE. Start before the date printed on the card, and if you must travel in between, ask for a return authorisation first.
Questions
May I leave Spain before I hold the card?
Yes, as long as your visa is still valid. Once the visa has expired and the card is not made yet, request an autorización de regreso (return authorisation) first.
I am British. Is the TIE for me?
Yes. Since Brexit, UK citizens are non-EU in Spain. Those who lived here before the end of 2020 hold a TIE under the Withdrawal Agreement.
Will a new card give me a new NIE?
No. Every card you hold shows the number you were first given.
I live in Cabanillas del Campo. Where are my fingerprints taken?
You book for the province of Guadalajara. policia.es lists TIE issue at the Brigada on Avenida del Ejército, and your confirmation names the office.
