Travelling while your card is renewed: the autorización de regreso
If your TIE is being renewed, made or replaced, get an autorización de regreso (return authorisation) before a trip abroad: it is what lets you back in. Leaving is rarely the problem; coming back without it can be. In Guadalajara, policia.es lists it at the Brigada on Avenida del Ejército.
Cases that call for it
- Your TIE has expired, and you asked for the renewal in time
- Your first card is still being made, and your visa is no longer valid
- Your card was lost or stolen, and the new one is not ready
When you may not need it
If your TIE card is valid on the day you leave and on the day you come back, the card is usually enough. A valid visa also lets you travel. Check the dates before you buy a ticket.
Your return authorisation folder
- The application form for the return authorisation, filled in and signed
- Your passport, with a photocopy
- Proof that the renewal is under way, or the denuncia (police report) if the card was lost or stolen
- A paper that explains why you travel, if the office asks
- The 790-012 fee, paid, with the box for this procedure
Where to ask in Guadalajara
policia.es lists “autorizaciones de regreso”, return authorisations, among the procedures of Guadalajara’s Brigada Provincial de Extranjería y Fronteras, Avenida del Ejército 12. Book this procedure on the official booking website, for the province of Guadalajara, as soon as you know you must travel, because free days are not always near.
On the government’s page, the autorización de regreso also appears in the list of the Oficina de Extranjería on Avenida Francia. Go to the office printed on your appointment confirmation.

- Read the dates the authorisation covers
- If your route passes through another Schengen country, check that the document is enough for that stop
- Keep passport, authorisation and renewal receipt in one place while you travel
Questions
Is the return authorisation a visa?
No. It lets you re-enter Spain during the time your card is in process. It does not replace the TIE.
Can I fly anywhere with it?
You can leave for any country; the document is about coming back to Spain. A stop in another Schengen country can cause problems, so check your route.
How early should I ask?
As soon as your dates are clear. The appointment depends on free days in the province, and an emergency does not create new ones.
