Stone 11 of 14 · Your situation, and Guadalajara itself
Moving from Madrid to Guadalajara: what changes on your papers
Moving from Madrid leaves your NIE, your card and your Social Security number as they are. What changes is your town hall, the province where you book appointments, and the address the authorities keep for you. Begin with the padrón of your new town, even if you still work in Madrid.
What does not change
- Your NIE, one number for life in every province
- Your green certificate or your TIE, which are valid in all of Spain
- Your Social Security number
- Your right to live and work here, if you already have it
The first stone: the padrón in your new town
Register on the padrón, the list of residents, of the town where you now live: Guadalajara, Azuqueca de Henares, Cabanillas del Campo or another. When the new town registers you, you leave the Madrid padrón; you do not need to remove yourself there first.
Ask for a padrón certificate after you register. Many other offices will want to see it.
Your new address and the police
The rules ask EU residents with a green certificate, and non-EU residents with a TIE, to tell the police about a new address. In the province of Guadalajara, policia.es lists the EU regime and TIE issue at the Brigada on Avenida del Ejército. Ask at your appointment whether your case needs a new certificate or card, or only an update.
From now on, book in Guadalajara
Your next procedures, such as a renewal, fingerprints for a new card or a return authorisation, are booked for the province of Guadalajara, not Madrid. If you started a request in Madrid before the move, ask the office that has it what to do next. Do not book the same procedure again here without asking.
Other places to update
- Your employer and your bank
- The Agencia Tributaria (the tax office), for your tax address
- The Social Security (TGSS), if you work for yourself or receive benefits
- Your health care: each region runs its own, so ask at your new health centre how to move from the Comunidad de Madrid to Castilla-La Mancha
- The DGT, the traffic office, if you have a Spanish driving licence or a car

Questions
Will Guadalajara give me a different NIE?
No. One number serves you in every province, for life.
I still work in Madrid. Where do I book?
Residence procedures are normally handled in the province where you live, so book for Guadalajara. If your case is unusual, ask at your next appointment.
My TIE renewal is in process in Madrid. Can I move?
Yes. Tell the office that has your file about the new address, and ask where the next step will take place.
Does the move change my residence status?
No. A move inside Spain changes your address and your town hall, not your status.
