Studying in Guadalajara from outside the EU

A student from outside the EU comes with a student visa from a Spanish consulate. In Guadalajara, a longer course then means fingerprints for a TIE card, and a prórroga (extension) if the course goes on. The permission is called estancia por estudios, a stay for studies, and it is not a work permit.

Before you fly

You apply through the Spanish consulate that serves your home region. Consulates usually ask for the letter of admission from the school or university, proof of enough money, and health insurance; some also ask for a medical certificate or a criminal record certificate. Each one publishes its own list. Once you arrive, a longer course also means fingerprints for a TIE card.

Your first weeks in Guadalajara

  • Register on the padrón with your address
  • A short course may need only the visa; for a longer stay, book the fingerprints for your TIE quickly
  • For the card: your passport and visa, form EX-17, a photo, proof of the 790-012 payment and your enrolment letter
  • Collect the card when it is ready

Asking for an extension

If your course goes on, ask for a prórroga (extension) before your current stay ends. You usually show your progress in the course, your enrolment for the next period, and that you still have money and health insurance.

policia.es lists students (estudiantes) and extensions (prórrogas) among the procedures of the Brigada, the police unit on Avenida del Ejército. For some requests, the decision comes instead from the Oficina de Extranjería, the government office for permits. Your appointment confirmation names the office.

Work during your studies

A stay for studies is not a work permit. Students can sometimes work alongside their course, within limits set by the rules, and any job also needs a Social Security number. Check your own case before you sign a contract.

Questions

Should I get a NIE before I travel?

Usually not. Your number comes with your stay and is printed on your TIE. If you need it earlier, for example to rent a room from abroad, ask us.

Can my partner come with me?

Close family can sometimes come with a linked visa. It depends on the rules for students, so ask the consulate before you plan it.

My course is over. Can I stay?

A stay for studies ends with the studies. Other routes, for example for work, have their own rules, and the Oficina de Extranjería decides on them.
